FIRST TIME NOTARY PUBLIC APPLICANTS

All applicants who have never held a notary commission must take a three (3) hour state approved Basic Notary Public Education Course within six (6) months of submitting an application for a Notary Public Commission.

A certificate evidencing completion of the course must accompany the application for appointment. These applicants will then be required to pass a state-administered examination before their commission is appointed by the Department of State.

RENEWING NOTARY PUBLIC APPLICANTS

  • Any applicant who holds a current notary commission and submits a renewal application to the Department of State prior to the expiration of their current commission is required to complete a Continuing Notary Public Education Course within six (6) months of submitting their renewal application for a Notary Public Commission.
  • A certificate evidencing completion of the course must accompany the application for reappointment. Completing an examination is not required as long as the renewal application is received by the Department of State on or before the commission expiration date.

  • Applicants who previously held a notary commission but whose commission has expired at the time their application for reappointment is received by the Department of State must take a three (3) hour Basic Notary Public Education Course within six (6) months of submitting an application for a Notary Public Commission.

  • A certificate evidencing completion of the course must accompany the application for appointment. These applicants will then be required to pass a state-administered examination before their commission is reappointed by the Department of State.

Basic Course - Three (3) hour course is required for all first time applicants who do not hold a current notary commission and all applicants who previously held a commission but whose commission has expired at the time their application is received by the Department of State. The course must be taken within six (6) months of submitting an application for a Notary Public Commission. A certificate of course completion is provided at the end of the course and must accompany the notary public application. Course material covered in the Basic Education Course will provide the information needed to sit for the State required examination.

Continuing Course - Three (3) hour course is required for all notary public applicants who hold a current commission and submit their renewal application to the Department of State prior to their commission expiration date. The course must be taken within six (6) months of submitting a renewal application for a Notary Public Commission. A Certificate of course completion is provided at the end of the course and must accompany the notary public renewal application. Notaries Public who renew their commission in a timely manner will not be required to pass an examination. However, if the renewal application is received by the Department of State after the commission expiration date (even if by one day), the applicant will be required to complete the Basic Education Course and pass the State required examination.
