First Time Notary Public Applicants

Applicants who have never held a notary commission must take a three (3) hour state-approved Basic Notary Public Education Course within six (6) months of submitting an application for a Notary Public Commission.

A certificate evidencing completion of the course must accompany the application for an appointment. These applicants will then be required to pass a state-administered examination before the Department of State appoints their commission.

The course material covered in the Basic Education Course will provide the information needed to sit for the State required examination.

Renewing Notary Public Applicants

Any applicant who holds a current notary commission and submits a renewal application to the Department of State before the expiration of their current commission is required to complete a Continuing Notary Public Education Course within six (6) months of submitting their renewal application for a Notary Public Commission.

A certificate evidencing completion of the course must accompany the application for reappointment. Completing an examination is not required as long as the Department of State receives the renewal application on or before the commission expiration date.

Applicants who previously held a notary commission but whose commission has expired at the time the Department of State receives their application for reappointment must take a three (3) hour Basic Notary Public Education Course within six (6) months of submitting an application for a Notary Public Commission.

Notaries public who renew their commission promptly will not be required to pass an examination. However, if the Department of State receives the renewal application after the commission expiration date (even if by one day), the applicant will be required to complete the Basic Education Course and pass the State required examination.
